Nestled amidst the lush greenery of the Karnala Bird Sanctuary, the Karnala Fort stands as a testament to the region’s rich history. Perched atop a hill, its distinctive thumb-shaped pinnacle, also known as Funnel Hill, has been a silent observer of centuries of change.
A Fort of Strategic Significance:
Karnala Fort’s history dates back to the 13th century, with evidence suggesting its construction under the Devagiri Yadavs and Tughlaq rulers. Its strategic location overlooking the Bor Pass, a crucial trade route connecting the Konkan coast to the Deccan Plateau, made it a coveted stronghold. The fort changed hands multiple times, witnessing the rise and fall of various empires, including the Gujarat Sultanate, the Nizam Shahi dynasty of Ahmednagar, and even the Portuguese for a brief period.
Shivaji Maharaj and the Marathas:
The fort holds a special place in Maratha history. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured Karnala in 1670, recognizing its importance in defending the Konkan region. The fort served as a vital outpost for the Maratha Navy, keeping a watchful eye on the Arabian Sea.
Exploring the Ruins:
Today, the fort stands in ruins, a shadow of its former glory. Yet, it retains an aura of majesty. The trek to the fort is an adventure in itself, leading through dense forests teeming with birdlife. The ascent is moderately challenging, but the panoramic views from the top are truly rewarding. The remnants of fortifications, bastions, and water cisterns offer a glimpse into the fort’s past grandeur.
A Birdwatcher’s Paradise:
Beyond its historical significance, Karnala Fort is a haven for birdwatchers. The surrounding sanctuary is home to a diverse range of avian species, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts.
A Journey Through Time:
A visit to Karnala Fort is not just a trek; it’s a journey through time. It’s a chance to connect with nature, explore history, and witness the enduring spirit of a fort that has withstood the test of time.
